Amazon, SoftBank, Microsoft, and Nvidia are all expected to participate in OpenAI’s round — a coalition of investors whose combined resources make the scale of the capital event somewhat less surprising, if no less extraordinary. Together, they are making a massive collective bet that OpenAI’s future value will justify the $730 billion valuation at which they are investing.
Nvidia’s journey to this investment has included one of the more notable deal collapses in recent AI history. The $100 billion arrangement announced last September was built on chip purchase conditions that made it circular — Nvidia’s capital would effectively cycle back through OpenAI’s hardware orders. When the deal was confirmed to be non-binding and OpenAI went public with chip partnerships involving AMD and Broadcom, the arrangement dissolved.
The new deal is straightforwardly equity-based. Nvidia buys into OpenAI’s future without any chip conditions attached. The investment is honest in a way its predecessor was not — and in markets where AI deal structures have sometimes seemed designed for headlines rather than value creation, that honesty is significant.
The challenges facing OpenAI at its extraordinary valuation are well-documented: declining market share, rising competition from Anthropic, high cash burn, advertising controversy, and investor uncertainty. Private AI valuations are at new peaks — but the companies beneath those valuations still have to perform. Nvidia’s $30 billion equity investment is a bet that OpenAI will.
