In response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed assertion that Greenland should be under American control, Finnish leaders have voiced their opposition, emphasizing existing territorial jurisdictions. Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen have both stressed that decisions regarding Greenland fall under the jurisdiction of Denmark and Greenland, dismissing any notion of U.S. claims over the territory.
The comments from Finland’s leadership came on the heels of Trump’s statements at a recent NATO summit, where the issue of Greenland’s sovereignty once again took center stage. Valtonen highlighted Finland’s unwavering support for Denmark’s territorial integrity, aligning with Denmark’s stance on the matter.
Addressing Arctic security, Valtonen argued that it should be managed through established defense collaborations rather than territorial disputes. She emphasized that Denmark and the United States are already engaged in discussions about defense cooperation, and noted that NATO is actively working to bolster security across the Arctic region.
