The Gulf of America Alliance has unveiled a slate of 20 new and ongoing projects under its Gulf Star Program, designed to bolster both the environmental and economic resilience of the Gulf Coast. These initiatives, spanning Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, Florida, Mississippi, and Gulfwide efforts, aim to tackle issues like habitat restoration, coastal resilience, water quality improvement, and environmental education. By fostering healthier ecosystems, the program seeks to strengthen local communities, delivering long-term benefits through a collaborative public-private approach.
Operating as a public-private partnership, the Gulf Star Program merges financial support from government agencies and private organizations to address key priorities set by the five Gulf states. Besides funding, the program assists smaller organizations and communities by reducing administrative hurdles and funding match obligations. The Gulf of America Alliance collaborates with over 165 entities, including government agencies, academia, industry, local communities, and nonprofits, focusing on areas such as coastal resilience, habitat conservation, marine debris, education, wildlife, fisheries, and water resources management.
The projects newly funded under this program cover a diverse array of conservation and community-focused initiatives. These include expanding a native plant producer network to Alabama schools, enhancing hatching success for ground-nesting shorebirds in Louisiana, managing wetland ponds to aid Whooping Cranes in Texas, and pioneering techniques for early detection of Vibrio bacteria across the Gulf. Other efforts involve marsh restoration in Texas and Louisiana, marine debris education in Florida, regional sediment resource inventories, youth ambassador programs, coastal data-sharing initiatives, studies on northward-shifting tropical species, living shoreline design and construction, pollinator habitat improvements in Mississippi, community resilience assessments in Alabama, and comprehensive resilience planning across all five Gulf states.

The 2026 iteration of the program is backed by partners such as 1PointFive, Williams, Sempra Infrastructure, the National Academies’ Gulf Research Program, Shell, Motiva Enterprises, Chevron, Alabama Power, Freeport McMoRan, Genesis Energy, Valero, Clean Gulf Associates, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the five Gulf states. Their combined efforts support projects aimed at achieving healthier beaches, cleaner waters, productive ecosystems, and robust coastal economies.
