In a bid to advance peace talks amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff held discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Sunday. This meeting followed their earlier talks in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Witkoff described the discussions with Zelenskyy as “very constructive and substantive,” expressing optimism for future collaborative dialogues involving the US, Ukraine, and European nations.
The meeting in Kyiv also saw participation from national security advisers from Britain, France, and Germany, who briefly joined the discussions. President Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s intention to pursue trilateral talks with the United States and European allies as part of efforts to progress peace negotiations. Additionally, Zelenskyy reiterated the necessity for continued Western support as Ukraine braces for another challenging winter, highlighting the need for air defense systems, energy support, and increased shipments of US liquefied natural gas.
Despite these diplomatic engagements, significant hurdles remain in the path of peace negotiations, with major disputes persisting over territorial control in eastern Ukraine. Previous talks have been centered around a 20-point peace framework crafted by Washington and Kyiv, yet consensus on several critical issues has not been reached with Russia.
On the ground, the conflict continues to exact a heavy toll. Ukrainian authorities reported that Russian strikes resulted in the deaths of at least eight individuals and injured 69 across the nation in the past day. Kyiv has been particularly affected by sustained drone attacks, while the country grapples with a shortage of US-made Patriot interceptor missiles.
As the war nears its fifth year, Ukrainian officials remain vigilant of further Russian assaults targeting the nation’s energy infrastructure, especially with the looming threat of intensified strikes during the harsh winter months.
